The Concept Behind Centrifugal Water Pumps and Its Advantages Over Other Types of Pumps

Centrifugal water pumps are another type of pump that is characterised by its impeller, which is like a turbine that has curved vanes. It is named after the physics concept of centrifugal force, which is defined as a centre-fleeing force away from the axis of rotation of a rotating object.

Centrifugal pumps are generally used to transport fluids from large sources and into smaller connections like piping. These pumps are available in various classifications such as the peripheral vane and radial impeller.

How centrifugal pumps works

As the water enters the pump impeller, the impeller pushes the water outward as its backward-swept blades spins. The mechanical energy of the motor is converted to the kinetic energy of the water in motion, and some of that energy is converted to potential energy attributed to lifting the water up against gravity.

Simply put, think of an umbrella that is wet with rain. When you rotate it slowly, due to inertia, the water that drips around the sides will tend to rotate tangential to the edges of the umbrella. However, rotating it faster will cause the water to drip away from umbrella, known as centrifugation.

A centrifugal pump has six basic parts: impeller, pump axis, pump body, stuffing box, seal ring and bearing. One of the more important innovations for the evolution of the centrifugal pump is the impeller. Originally, an innovation was made to design these types of pumps so that there are only a few moving parts, thus the impeller was made. In fact, it is the only moving part in centrifugal pumps.

The primary body of this device, called the pump body, is used to hold up the entire equipment. The bearing is used as a form of support for the pump axis. The main purpose of a seal ring is to increase reflux resistance and lowering the leakage from within. Finally, a stuffing box is used for sealing the breach in between the pump axis and the shell.

However, centrifugal pumps are quite popular because of their versatility, plus the fact that they do not require a lot of maintenance and literally costs less.
